Meskipun tahu bahwa Gus Dur sakit-sakitan, saat kemarin Tuhan mengatakan, ”Gus, sudah cukup!”, mengagetkan juga. Banyak dari kita, khususnya tokoh dan umat berbagai agama di Indonesia, merasa kehilangan. Kita menyertai arwahnya dengan doa-doa kita agar ia dengan aman, gembira, dan pasti terheran-heran dapat sampai ke asal-usulnya.

Betapa luar biasa Abdurrahman Wahid, Gus Dur kita ini! Seorang nasionalis Indonesia seratus persen, dengan wawasan kemanusiaan universal. Seorang tokoh Muslim yang sekaligus pluralis dan melindungi umat- umat beragama lain. Enteng-enteng saja dalam segala situasi, tetapi selalu berbobot; acuh-tak acuh, tetapi tak habis peduli dengan nasib bangsanya. Orang pesantren yang suka mendengarkan simfoni-simfoni Beethoven.

Ada yang tidak mengerti mengapa Gus Dur begitu ramah terhadap agama-agama minoritas, tetapi sering keras terhadap agamanya sendiri. Namun, Gus Dur demikian karena ia begitu mantap dalam agamanya. Karena itu, ia tidak perlu defensif dan tidak takut bahwa agamanya dirugikan kalau ia terbuka terhadap mereka yang berbeda.

Apakah Gus Dur seorang demokrat? Ia sendiri sebenarnya lebih menyerupai kombinasi antara kiai dan raja Jawa. Namun, ia seorang demokrat dalam arti yang lebih mendalam. Ia betul-betul meyakini dan menghayati hak-hak asasi manusia. Ia tidak tahan melihat seseorang terinjak martabatnya, ia menentang kekejaman atas nama apa pun.

Bagi saya, Gus Dur mewujudkan Islam yang percaya diri, positif, terbuka, ramah. Dengan demikian, ia memproyeksikan gambar yang positif tentang Islam. Dan, kalau pada kunjungan negara ia menyalami kepala negara lain dengan lelucon, mereka menyadari bahwa presiden Muslim ini seorang humanis dan warga dunia.

Bahwa karier politik aktif Gus Dur kontroversial berkaitan juga dengan kenyataan bahwa ia tidak dapat melihat. Keterbukaannya tidak pernah berubah.

Apa yang tinggal sesudah Gus Dur pergi? Sekurang-kurangnya dua. Pertama, hubungan begitu baik antara umat beragama yang dirintisnya akan berkembang terus.

Kedua, dengan generasi muda NU, Gus Dur meninggalkan kader intelektual bangsa yang terbuka, pluralis, dan cerdas; modal bagus bagi masa depan bangsa.

Yang dirintis Gus Dur akan berjalan terus. Nevertheless, Gus, we will miss you. Resquiescat in pace.

Reflection: Some Words to Entering 2010

Before you leave this year (2009). I encourage you to look back your past in years, not to regret it or to be proud of it, but to count the GOD’S blessing in our life. Although some of you might say:”I had nothing in my life”. Just take a mirror and look at yourself.
You are still alive, even the every single air that you breath is a God’s blessing, then count it up, how much air have you exhaled?
Won’t you say thanks God for it?

Let’s we walk in the year ahead with one level higher in faith and spiritual than this year, much wiser in everything.

May be we can’t do many things, but remember: we can do all things through Christ who strengthen us and when we do something, shall we do it excellent as we can try!

The legend of how tiger become a Chinese zodiac

At the ancient times, the lion was a Chinese zodiac; there was no tiger at all. However the lion is very cruel, so the supreme God wants to take away the lion’s Chinese zodiac status. But the supreme God cannot do so because the lion is the king of all animals. If the supreme God gets rid of it, he would need a new animal to control all the animals. Then the supreme God remembered the tiger.

The tiger was only a insignificant creature live in the human world, but when it learned fighting skills from the cat, the tiger become a ferocious warrior. All the animals challenged him are either dead or mortally wounded. After the tiger emerged victorious from all the battles, the tiger become very famous for his skills. In fact the tiger become so famous the supreme God summoned the tiger to heaven. When the tiger arrived at heaven, it defeated all the supreme God’s warriors. After the fight, the tiger become one of the supreme God’s warriors.

But sometimes after tiger become a supreme God’s warrior, the animals started to attack humans because lack of control. This have attracted the supreme God’s attention, he then sends tiger down to protect the humans. The tiger request every battles he wins, he want a reward. The supreme God accepted its request.

When the tiger arrived at the human world, the tiger learned the lion, bear and the horse are the strongest animals. So the tiger challenged them all and won. When the other evil beasts heard this, they all hide in a forest of where no one leaves and was never seen again. The humans thanked the tiger for his defeat of the beasts.

The tiger was then summoned backed to the heaven, because the tiger have won three times, the supreme God put three horizontal lines on its forehead. Sometime after, the human world was again disturbed by an evil and magical turtle. The human world was flooded by water summoned by the turtle. The tiger was again send down to earth and killed the turtle. The supreme God then added a vertical line in the center of the three horizontal lines, creating the Chinese word “king”. The word can still be seen today on all tigers’ forehead.

When the lion’s infamy was heard by the supreme God, he decided to take away the lion’ Chinese zodiac status and the tiger was chosen to replaced the lion as the Chinese zodiac and the king of all animals.
